Business Booming For Holiday Pop-Up Stores In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Do you know what a pop-up store is? It's a growing trend in retail shopping, and Pittsburgh is not being left out.

But the latest pop-up in our city isn't a store at all.

It's a bar on Liberty Avenue called "Miracle on Liberty," and since it opened on Friday, it's become a busy spot.

The holiday themed "Miracle" first popped up in New York City two years ago, but has franchise pop-ups all over the world this year.

"There's about 15 to 20 across the world, ranging from Paris, France, to Athens, Greece, to Pittsburgh, New York and Seattle," said owner Spencer Warren.

Warren says they built the Pittsburgh location in just five days: "We built the bar and everything from scratch."

Part of the sales even goes to charity. But don't get used to the place, because it disappears New Year's Eve.

There was another pop-up in the same space before, the Dream Cream Ice Cream shop.

Across town on Smithfield Street is the Steel City Holiday Pop-Up. The online clothing retailer is owned by a couple from Monroeville, but they opened the pop-up store on Friday. It'll close on Christmas Eve.

It's in a space that was just used by another pop-up, vintage-inspired clothing retailer ModCloth.

Then, there's Amazing Books on Liberty Avenue, which started as a pop-up called Awesome Books and became permanent.

Finally, you might say the Holiday Market in Market Square is a pop-up as well, since the unique shops disappear when the season ends.

Many of the pop-up owners say Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership was instrumental in helping them find space.
