Burglar Quickly Arrested After Breaking Into Local Restaurant

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A burglar was arrested after surveillance video captured him rifling through a local restaurant in search of anything of value.

What he didn't know was that at the very moment he was fumbling around in the restaurant, his picture was being sent to security and police were on their way.

Randy Hutchinson works security for Frank and Shirley's Restaurant on Route 51.

Monday night, Hutchinson was at home, getting ready for bed when he got an important message on his cell phone.

"There was an attempted break-in at the lottery booth and I looked on my phone, there was a person inside ransacking the place," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson is connected to the restaurant security system 24-7 and gets a message when something happens to the alarm.

"Once the alarm triggers, it automatically records like that, and then we'll get a call from the security system saying there was a break-in and they'll dispatch police," he said.

It was a bit of technology the suspect didn't take into account when police say he broke in.

He might have been looking for cash or instant lottery tickets. However, no cash is left at the restaurant overnight, so he finally had to take off empty-handed.

"By the time I got here, he was on the street on [Route] 51 in front of the restaurant and when he saw police, he took off and ran," Hutchinson said.

Police said he tried to run across four lanes of Route 51 traffic. However, officers caught up with him a short distance away and cuffed him in the middle of Route 51.

The suspect has since been identified as Robert Campoli.

He is facing a list of charges including burglary, criminal mischief, escape and resisting arrest.
