Munhall SWAT Suspect Found Dead In House

MUNHALL (KDKA) - The suspect in a lengthy standoff with police and the SWAT team in Munhall this morning following an alleged abduction in the city is dead.

Investigators now identify him as 31-year-old James Carlini of Hazelwood. He was found dead inside the home.

Before the standoff, police say Carlini is accused of abducting a woman at gunpoint on the South Side of Pittsburgh.

According to police, it all began just before 3 a.m. when Carlini allegedly fired shots into the home of the abduction victim on South 22nd Street.

He got away in a silver Impala, which police say was eventually spotted in the 200-block of Washington Street in Munhall.

Police say that's where they called to the suspect and he appeared on a porch with a rifle and there was an exchange of gunfire with police around 4:30 a.m. Carlini was struck by a bullet in the neck.

Investigators say he told some witnesses that he didn't intend to be taken alive and intended to shoot police.

The SWAT team was then called to the scene.

The suspect was found dead in the home shortly after 1 p.m.

"After attempting to bring him out of the home by various means calling out to him, sirens, lights, and also, ultimately, firing several rounds of gas into the home, the officers then entered the home and found the actor DOA on the second floor of the home," said Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt. "He had a gunshot wound to the right temple and a handgun in his hand which was then kicked out of his hand by one of the SWAT officers."

Four other people, including the alleged abduction victim, were able to get out of the home uninjured.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office will determine Carlini's cause and manner of death.

Due to the SWAT incident on Washington Street, the Steel Valley School District has closed Park Elementary School, Franklin Primary School, Steel Valley Middle School and Steel Valley High School. All other schools, except Barrett Elementary School, were put on a two-hour delay.

St. Therese School in Munhall was also closed today.
