Boy, 8, Killed In Westmoreland County Vehicle Accident

DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A rear-end type crash killed an 8-year-old boy Monday in Westmoreland County.

Police say the boy's car was stopped at a red light in Derry Township when it was struck from behind just after noon.

More information came out Tuesday about the accident that killed 8-year-old Augustus Anderson, including the fact the man who apparently struck the vehicle the boy was in shouldn't have been behind the wheel. He should have been in a prison cell.

Broken glass and orange spray paint on the road were the only things that hinted of the terrible thing that happened at the intersection of Route 22 and Stone Jug Road.

"It's traumatic to have any loss of life, but when you lose a child, I can only imagine what the family has to go through," Trooper Steve Limani with the Pennsylvania State Police said.

State police say 31-year-old Adam Duffy of Indiana slammed his SUV into the back of a Subaru driven by Anthony Anderson of Greensburg. Anderson had halted for a stop light. He wasn't alone in the vehicle.

"There was an 8-year-old boy that was trapped inside the vehicle," Limani said.

Augustus Anderson, the driver's son, would die from his injuries. Anthony Anderson was sent to the hospital. Duffy, meanwhile, was hand-cuffed.

"That individual was wanted out of Indiana County, he had bench warrants for his arrest for ... drug-related charges," Limani said.

Duffy has an extensive criminal record to include drug, theft and motor vehicle violations. He spent time in jail. This fatal accident will likely lead to more charges.

"This individual shouldn't have been on the road," Limani said.
