Bomb Squad Investigating Suspicious Devices 'Containing Wicks' On North Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A road was closed down and nearby buildings were evacuated late Thursday night after two suspicious devices were found on the city's North Side.

Authorities, including the Pittsburgh Bomb Squad, were called to the 1000-block of Woods Run Avenue around 10:30 p.m. That's right on the border of Marshall-Shadeland and Brighton Heights.

According to police, the devices were found in the street and, "appeared to be prescription pill bottles containing wicks."

Police say one of them detonated. The bomb squad eventually detonated the second package around midnight.

Officials closed down Woods Run Avenue as the bomb squad did its work. They evacuated buildings in the area as a precaution.

One woman said she was sleeping with her 2-year-old daughter when it hit her home, before catching fire.

"We heard something hit the window and when it hit the window, it kind of made a large boom, a loud boom," she said. "So, I came outside and I saw it on fire, like on the curb by my truck."

"One of them exploded. Her fiancée put it out and the neighbor called the cops," Charles Hall said.

Pittsburgh police were able to obtain some information about who was possibly behind the two devices.

"It was determined that the devices were thrown from a red Ford and was occupied by two black males," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said.

There were no injuries reported.

Officials are looking into the contents of the suspicious packages and trying to determine who left them there and why.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
