Bob Walk: Pitching Staff Is Becoming Family

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Pirates broadcaster Bob Walk joined "The Fan Morning Show" Wednesday morning in his regular weekly spot to discuss the recent performance of the pitching staff.

Walk broke down Charlie Morton's first start of the season, which went quite well.

"What I saw that I really liked was that he kept things very simple," Walk said. "He really did lean on the sinking fast ball for the vast majority of the time, didn't throw a whole lot of off-speed pitches and just went out there with a game plan. I'm going to get a whole bunch of ground balls and hopefully there are enough of them [hit] at guys that they'll be easy outs and double plays. When he does that and has good control, those two things go hand-in-hand, so very efficient."

Walk also discussed the camaraderie among the starting pitchers, who have all been having success lately and will be jockeying for position in a potential playoff rotation.

"It's fun to see that they're having that little competition with each other," Walk said. "This is really what you get when things start going well, with a good team that's winning, guys do start doing little stuff like that to make the season fun. That's really why it is so much fun to win and why you hate to be on that losing team, because none of this stuff happens. Everyone is looking out for each other on a winning team; everybody is looking out for themselves on a losing team. Right now, it's- to steal something from [the 1979 Pirates]- getting to be a really good family atmosphere down there, where they are all watching each other's backs."

Walk can be heard on "The Fan Morning Show" every Wednesday at 8:48 a.m.
