Bishop Announces 2 More Local Churches Merging Together

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two more local churches are merging together as congregation numbers drop.

Bishop David Zubik announced that Holy Cross Parish in East Pittsburgh will merge into Good Shepherd Parish, located in Braddock.

Father Albert J. Semler will preside as pastor.

"No doubt, this is particularly painful for the parishioners of Holy Cross, who will experience the most dramatic changes this merger will bring," Zubik said in a statement. "The parishioners of Good Shepherd, who have already sacrificed much that was precious to them in order to maintain a Catholic community, can certainly empathize and offer comfort and welcome. I am trusting in your strong faith, and in the love and power of the Holy Spirit, to carry you through this important change in your respective faith communities."

Additionally, Saint Helen and Saint William churches will be permanently closed.

Saturday, it was reported that Saint Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Monongahela will close its doors next month.
