Bicyclist Recovering After Hit-And-Run In East Liberty

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating a hit-and-run in East Liberty that left a teenage bicyclist injured Sunday.

It happened around 7 p.m. at the intersection of North Highland Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard.

The entire scene was captured on surveillance video of a nearby business. The cyclist is riding along Highland Avenue, then the car and the cyclist crash and the car never stops.

"He was following the rules of the road, doing everything right, this guy broke the law in terms of speeding, in terms of not stopping and rendering aide," said Scott Bricker, of Bike Pittsburgh.

The victim in this case has not been identified by police. After the accident, he was transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

Police say he is 16-years-old, and witnesses report seeing him pedal through the red light at the intersection. The car has been identified as a dark blue BMW.

Sources tell KDKA that police have identified the license plate information on the car, and a possible location of the car. But police aren't commenting.

"This is how this area is. People don't bike a lot around here. They drive cars, they drive trucks and bikers are an inconvenience for them," says Joel Gundi, of East Liberty.

Police say the investigation into what caused the collision is ongoing. The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.
