Boy Playing With Lighter Reportedly Sparks Beaver Falls House Fire

BEAVER FALLS (KDKA) -- Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that swept through a home in Beaver County this afternoon.

It happened in the 1200-block of 5th Avenue in Beaver Falls.

A grandmother and her grandsons were inside the home at the time.

Fire officials say one of those grandsons accidentally started the fire while he was reportedly playing with a cigarette lighter.

He caught a mattress on fire in a second-floor bedroom.

When his grandmother found out how the fire started, she gave him an earful right there on the street in front of fire crews.

She told KDKA that she first tried to put the flames out herself.

"I went in there and tried to put the fire out," said Wanda Brown. "It was in the boys' bedroom, and I tried to use the fire extinguisher, but it was too much smoke, too intense, and I called for everyone to get out of the house."

Fire crews say the grandson admitted to starting the fire.

Everyone got out safely.
