AT&T Wireless Cuts Prices To Win Subscribers

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's a real battle out there, as the nation's major wireless service providers want to capture more of the market by luring you away from your current network.

"These are best ever prices for us, and there's no better time to get out and switch," says Joe Dananay, manager of AT&T's McKnight Road store.

The latest promotion comes from AT&T Wireless, trying to catch up to Verizon Wireless, the market leader.

AT&T is cutting prices on its shared data plan for families who have multiple phones and don't go over 10 gigabytes per month in data usage.

"It's $100 for the ten gigabyte portion of the plan and then each phone is $15 per month," says Dananay.

With unlimited texting and phone calls, that's $160 for a family of four.

Dananay told KDKA money editor Jon Delano that the new deal is open to all.

Dananay: "This is for both brand new customers and existing customers."

Delano: "That's nice because a lot of times these special deals are only for new people."

Dananay: "Absolutely. And we find a lot of frustration with that from our customers. We hear that, so that's what these plans are aimed for both new and existing customers to take advantage of."

Dananay took advantage himself.

"I saved about $50 on my own plan," he said. "I'm very excited about that."

Not all phones are easily converted -- but AT&T has another incentive: a $100 credit for every new telephone line you bring to them.

With what AT&T calls the best deal ever, the real question for consumers is -- will the other providers like Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint beat the competition?

Verizon Wireless did not want to comment but referred to their "Share Everything" plan. On their website, the pricing still appears to be higher than AT&T -- so far.

Now we'll see if competition makes a difference.
