At Least 1 Person Dead In Garfield Fire

GARFIELD (KDKA) – One person was killed and two first responders were injured Friday afternoon when fire broke out at a home in Garfield.

According to officials, the fire broke out on the second floor of a home in the 5100-block of Kincaid Street around 1:30 p.m.

A 76-year-old man inside the home is believed to have been smoking near an oxygen tank.

Firefighters say they found the man on the second floor. He was pronounced dead by the medical examiner's office at the scene.

Authorities say an elderly woman was also in the home when the fire started, but she was able to get out. She suffered minor injuries, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The two first responders were hurt trying to help the victims. They suffered only minor injuries and were checked out at Mercy Hospital.

The home sustained moderate damage, and the duplex next door was not damaged.
