Man Shot 3 Times In Arlington Heights

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot three times in Arlington Heights Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Cordell Place and Arlington Avenue.

Attorney Phil DiLucente identified the victim as 25-year-old Elliot Blackwell of the Hill District.

First responders found Blackwell at 27th and Jane Streets on the South Side. Police said he was the passenger in a car en route to the hospital.

Sonya Toler, a Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman, told reporters, "We believe, at this point in the investigation, that the shooting took place on Cordell Place, and may have involved two groups of people firing at one another."

DiLucente says he was immediately contacted by Blackwell's family about the shooting. He said Blackwell was involved in two shooting incidents last February.

DiLucente told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "He was shot at on Feb. 25. Police took him into custody, but he was released because there were many witnesses, and the shooting was justified. On Feb. 27, he was fired at, and fired back. It is our contention, it was justified, and yet he was charged with attempted homicide."

In fact, DiLucente said Blackwell was scheduled to go on trial earlier Tuesday on the charge of attempted homicide. But the trial was put off after discussions with the District Attorney's Office.

DiLucente said of Blackwell, "He has not broken any laws; he didn't have a gun Tuesday night. He was just shopping, according to his mother. It sounds like somebody is targeting him, obviously. I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, let law enforcement do their job, but I can tell you this, if you're fired upon three times in one year, it's concerning."

Blackwell was last listed in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the chest, shoulder and leg.
