Apple Co-Founder Wozniak Discusses How Far Technology Has Come

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - He was the brains of a small company in California that took the world by storm. When you look at your phone or computer there is a good chance that device is an Apple product.

Steve Wozniak is a co-founder of the powerful tech company and he joined KDKA Radio's Larry Richert and John Shumway to talk about what he's done, what he is doing and his upcoming visit to Pittsburgh.

Wozniak makes his way to Pittsburgh this Wednesday for the Robert Morris Pittsburgh Speaker Series and it isn't his first visit.

"I have a lot of great memories from Pittsburgh and my son went to college at CMU," says Wozniak.

When Wozniak was helping to found Apple with Steve Jobs, computers, phones, and other electronic devices were very expensive.

"Bundling them all together was prohibited cost-wise," he said.

Thanks to the lowering cost of silicon chips a phone can now have features like video cameras and GPS for a much lower price.

"We can add every little sensor and feature for just a dollar or two here and there. It's so easy to put the camera in the phone for example," he said.

Many say that Wozniak's impact on humanity is big.

"I look back on it as a seed," he said.

He adds he didn't predict the world we have today back during his days founding Apple.

"We didn't' think there would ever be enough memory affordable in a computer to hold a single song. Now, you got thousands, tens of thousands of songs on your computer and hundreds of videos," he said.

Wozniak says he also has a fun side and spent some time designing Atari games and that helped him realize what people wanted in a computer.

"It had to be fun, it had to play games. Even if it was doing spreadsheets for your work, it had better be color and fanciful and full of animation," he said.

Wozniak will be at Heinz Hall this Wednesday for the Robert Morris University Pittsburgh Speaker Series. Go to www.pittsburghspeakersseries.org for more information.
