Appeals Court Upholds Sentence In Shooting Death Of 10-Year-Old Girl

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - An appeals court has upheld the sentence of one of the four men convicted in the shooting death of a 10-year-old girl during a Washington County home invasion robbery attempt.

The Superior Court panel ruled on the 30- to 60-year term imposed on 30-year-old Anthian Goehring in the March 2014 death of 10-year-old Ta'Niyah Thomas.

Prosecutors said he and three other men planned to rob a man in Washington, Pennsylvania, but shots fired through the apartment door killed the child.

Goehring argued that the sentence was excessive and disproportionate to his role, and also didn't' take into account his cooperation against his co-defendants and his character and history.

The appeals court, however, called the judge's opinion in the case "thorough and well-reasoned" and said it considered all relevant factors.
