Annual 5K Raises Funds For Rare Cancer Research

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A local non-profit organization held its annual 5k Saturday to raise money for rare cancer research.

It was the sixth annual 5k for Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma. The event, which was held in Allison Park, helps to raise money to research sarcoma, a rare cancer of the bones and connective tissues.

Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma has raised almost $700,000 over the past five years. This weekend's event raised just more than $120,000.

"It's just an awesome feeling to come here and see all the awesome teams, not that that's a good thing because it means that that's just that more families affected by sarcoma, but because everybody's here to support somebody," race event manager Sue Suit said.

Six young sarcoma patients were the "celebrity starters" for the race.
