Andrew McCutchen Weighs In On New Look

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Within hours of announcing he was getting rid of a 'weighty issue," over 100,000 people viewed Pirates All-Star Andrew McCutchen's haircut on YouTube.

"It was just time," McCutchen said Thursday morning. "I've had it for such a long time now and it was starting to get a bit long. I was looking forward to it and at the same time to be able to do it for charity."

KDKA's John Shumway Reports:

Ten of McCutchen's locks are being auctioned Thursday on MLB.com with all proceeds going to Pirates Charities. McCutchen said he got approval from his wife to do it and said this is something he decided to do when he got married.

There are a couple of bi-products of McCutchen's new hairdo. His Pirates fitted caps, no longer fit.

"It's like shaving out the inside of a watermelon and putting it on your head and putting a hat on top of it and then taking the watermelon off," McCutchen said.

The other is the potential for increased speed for the man who has 143 career steals.

"It has to, I mean it was weighing me down if anything," McCutchen said. "I know I'm going to feel a little faster. Now, I can be like the rest of the guys on the team and get my hair cut every two weeks."

His teammates were weighing in on his new look, too.

"He looks like he's shaved a few years off his life, but I imagine he'll feel a little more aerodynamic," said second baseman Neil Walker.

"And faster; I played with him in 2006 and that's the haircut he had back then," said Pirates reliever Jared Hughes, "and he's always been fast, but I like it."

But Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison said, "Hair has nothing to do with the performance."

KDKA's John Shumway Has More On The Battle For Roster Spots:

The 28-year-old McCutchen said he's not ready to shave it all off. His barber recommended the 'South of France' look.

McCutchen said it's a cool name, so he went with that.

"It is a bit strange," McCutchen said of someone owning a piece of his hair. "I guess there can be some value in it and it's going for a great cause. I'm happy that they are doing it.
