Route 65 Southbound Reopens Following Water Main Break In Ambridge

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) - A major water main break on the Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge on Thursday morning forced road closures and water lines to be shut off.

Crews began working to repair the cracked water main early in the morning but before they could get to it, the pipes seemingly stopped on their own as bitter temperatures froze the water.

As the water went from a steady flow to a trickle, the burst pipe left its damage on the roads as clumps of ice piled onto Route 65, which prevented cars from passing and forced the road to close.

The Ambridge Water Authority says they tried to shut the water off as soon as they could, giving crews a chance to get to work.

However, because of the frigid temperatures, it's possible not all of the work could be completed today in order to prevent workers from getting sick or catching frostbite.

They added they'll get it patched up and then the work should be finished by Friday.

Drivers are being asked to be cautious as Route 65 reopens to traffic.

No residents were affect by the break as the Ambridge Water Authority always keeps 2-3 days of excess water on hand for situations such as this one.
