Allegheny General Hospital Evacuates After Power Outage

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Allegheny General Hospital evacuated areas including patient clinics and outpatient surgery after a contractor caused a power outage by hitting power lines while digging.

Duquesne Light officials say about 1,500 customers briefly lost power when the incident occurred about 9 a.m. Monday.

The power was quickly restored and hospital spokesman Dan Laurent says the facility was expected to resume normal operations about 10 a.m.

Laurent says the hospital has a backup power system, but officials say the hospital lost enough power to warrant moving the patients anyway.

Duquesne Light says the contractor hit the power lines while digging between the McKees Rocks and the West End Bridge.
