Allegheny Co. Police Horse Retired After 10 Years With Department
ALLEGHENY COUNTY (KDKA) -- An Allegheny County police mounted unit horse was retired Sunday after serving the department for 10 years.
Allegheny County police say King, a 25-year-old thoroughbred, joined the Allegheny County Police Department in 2006 at age 15. The department has used King for crowd control during events such as the G-20 and the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup parades.
King is being retired due to a ruptured bursa in his knee. He will join three other retired Allegheny County police horses at the Round Hill Park pastures, where he will be cared for by animal keeper George Urstay.
All Allegheny County police horses are obtained through donations, and the department will be looking for two replacements in the near future.
