Allegheny Co. Drivers Cited The Most For Texting While Driving

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Allegheny County drivers just can't seem to put down the phone while driving.

According to AAA, Allegheny County ranked No. 1 for most texting while driving citations in the state.

Other local counties on the list included No. 10 Washington County and No. 13 Westmoreland County.

Allegheny County took the top spot with 126 citations between March 2013 and February 2014 – that's more than the 108 issued during the same time frame the previous year.

"If you're driving 55 miles per hour and you're sending or receiving a text - the average to send or receive is 4.6 seconds - you can travel the length of a football field, basically with your eyes closed," AAA Senior Vice President Bevi Powell said. "It's as dangerous as drinking and driving."

In the past year, AAA says 1,206 citations were issued across the entire state.

Despite Allegheny County having the highest number for an individual county, the Philadelphia metro area ranked the worst as a whole.
