Aid Workers Find Families With Children Living In Condemned Building

MOUNT OLIVER (KDKA) -- Aid workers made a disturbing find in a condemned building in Mount Oliver Saturday.

Three families, including two children and a baby, were living there without heat and water.

There was electricity, but only in parts of the building.

The Red Cross doesn't know how long the people were using the old Mount Oliver Public School building on Hays Street as a shelter.

"Anybody around here, you could ask. They were always sitting outside; you could see them in the window. I can see there's bare apartments now," said Teri Price, a neighbor. "Probably about a month ago, I seen people in here, now I don't see anybody here."

A Red Cross spokesperson confirmed for KDKA the building has been condemned; however, we found the main doors and several units inside open on Saturday evening.

The Red Cross will provide the families with shelter for three days.

After that, Catholic Charities will help them find a permanent home.
