A Flip Of The Coin: Sarris Creates Chocolate Coin Stamped With Candidates' Heads

CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- Sarris Candies of Canonsburg is known for its towering chocolate castle and the waterfall of chocolate that covers those irresistible chocolate pretzels.

A total of 400 employees turn out 50,000 pounds of chocolate a day.

But politics is pretty much off-limits. Until now.

"On one side of the coin, you can see, on one side is Hillary Clinton, on the other side is Donald Trump." KDKA radio host Marty Griffin is broadcasting on location, at the candy store. "I don't want to put any pressure on you, but the vote is tied right now. Your vote will determine the next President of the United States. Maybe."

Or maybe not.

Customers flip the chocolate coin to see if it comes up Clinton or Trump.

The two-headed novelty, coined by owner Bill Sarris, is a welcome relief from the ceaseless pounding of the presidential campaigns.

"Anytime we want to imprint anything, we put it in the little machine," Sarris says. "It's a really simple little process."

The coin, already wrapped in foil, is stamped with both candidates' heads, one to a side. The owner recalls how he came up with the idea.

"As I was walking by this machine, I said, 'Boy, you know what, it would be a great idea to have a coin that we could flip.' Nobody knows what's going on anyway."

So, how have customers reacted?

"You know what; I think it's been a fun reaction. There's been no controversy like you see on television," Sarris said.

How can you argue with chocolate? It's the perfect answer to those who say the candidates are two sides of the same coin.
