2 Facing Charges In North Shore Hotel Incident

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A family of four found themselves in handcuffs after a scuffle at a child's birthday party at a North Shore Hotel over the weekend.

Now, two women are facing assault charges.

The melee started Saturday night after the manager at the Residence Inn by Marriott called Pittsburgh Police.

He said there were too many people in one hotel room.

When officers responded, the people inside the hotel room wouldn't open the door unless they got a full refund, according to the criminal complaint.

Paris Matthews, her mother Tiffany Matthews and sister, Rayonda West, said they were never informed about an occupancy rules.

Matthews says there were 10 adults and 14 small children inside the hotel suite for a 2-year-old's birthday party.

The criminal complaint says that violates Pennsylvania State Law.

"You can say how many people can stay in the room and how many fits. That's the policy and procedure I understand that. But you cannot tell me how many guests can visit my room. You cannot tell me that," Rayonda West said

According to the criminal complaint, the hotel manager reportedly told the group they had five minutes to gather their things and leave.

After five minutes, when officers went to escort the group out, things got heated. Police say Paris and Tiffany Matthews got physical with officers. Those alleged actions forced police to use a Taser on Paris Matthews.

The women deny they were abusive and say it was the other way around.

"I backed myself onto the bed and now they're grabbing at me like get off me. (I have) no clothes on and my chest is out in front of them. (The) kids are screaming and crying," Paris Matthews said.

Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler says officers were not motivated to create a misleading report of lie about the event.
