1 In Custody Following Hill District SWAT Incident

HILL DISTRICT (KDKA) – One person is in custody following a SWAT situation in the Hill District Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the incident started around 9 a.m. in a building on Reed Street near the corner of Crawford Street.

The suspect has been identified as Termaine Washington, 24, of Pittsburgh.

Washington was wanted after walking away from a halfway house on April 8.

"The authorities appeared looking for a fella who was staying in my building," said homeowner Don Hetzler.

This morning, police were alerted to Washington being in the Reed Street building. They attempted to make contact with him, but SWAT was called in after he did not comply.

SWAT team members entered the building around 9:30 a.m. About an hour later, a flash bang was deployed and K-9 Units were used.

Hetzler has never seen the police descend on his place like that in the 30 years he's been opening his doors to people who need a hand.

"I've been a church pastor all my life and I reach out and help folks," he said. "That's what I do."

Hetzler said he called police when he noticed some things were missing.

Washington created a stir in September 2012 when over several days, he called 911 threatening to blow up the Allegheny County Jail, a T station and PNC Park. He told police he was trying to get a friend out of jail.

He went to prison last July for 24 months for the bomb threats and was released to the Renewal Halfway House April 8, and according to the U.S. Marshals, walked away the same day.

However, Washington was taken into custody without incident around 11 a.m.
