1 dead after car goes over hillside in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- One person is dead after a car went over a hillside and landed upside down on an abandoned garage in a Pittsburgh neighborhood on Monday.

The car went about 40 feet over a hillside near Lincoln Avenue on the border of Homewood and Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar.  The car was heading south on Lincoln Avenue when the driver veered left, went through a convenience store parking lot, hit a concrete barrier, pushing the car across Apple Street, went through a fence, hit a tree, went airborne and flipped upside down, landing on an abandoned garage. It's unclear what led up to that, a Pittsburgh police spokesperson said.

"We are not sure speed is a factor at this point. And we are not sure why, but it appears she left the roadway," Pittsburgh Public Safety PIO Emily Bourne said.

Medics confirmed the victim died at the scene. The medical examiner identified her as 33-year-old Aileena Davis.

No one else was in the car.

A neighbor told KDKA-TV there was recently a fatal crash in the same spot.

"Obviously, cars drive too fast up and down Lincoln Avenue. It's amazing to me that we don't have any speed bumps and I see them on much smaller streets and it's a major road. Cars go very fast. There was just an accident there earlier this summer, I'm sure it was this summer, with another fatality. And the railing up there has been missing for quite some time, so something needs to be done," said Sandra Glass.

A crane removed the car shortly before 6 p.m.

KDKA-TV reached out to Pittsburgh City Councilman Ricky Burgess about the safety concerns Glass pointed out but has not heard back.
