2022 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL draft tracker: Penguins select Owen Pickering
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The 2022 NHL draft kicked off Thursday at 7 p.m. from the Bell Centre in Montreal.
The event is in person this year after back-to-back virtual drafts due to COVID-19. Thursday's Day 1 features Round 1, with Rounds 2-7 coming Friday.
In Round 1, the Penguins selected Owen Pickering.

A trade! Pittsburgh traded its seventh-round pick to the Panthers for a seventh-round pick in 2023.

Penguins trade Liam Gorman to Blackhawks for sixth-round pick
The Penguins got a sixth-round draft pick, 167th overall, from the Blackhawks in exchange for forward Liam Gorman.
The Pens used that pick to get defenseman Nolan Collins.

The Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett and George Pickens, while the Penguins drafted Owen Pickering.

The 6-foot-4, 178-pound defenseman is a native of Manitoba who had 33 points in 62 games with the Swift Current Broncos in 2021-22. The Broncos are a junior hockey team in the Western Hockey League.

Pickering told NHL.com last month that he talked to all 32 teams before the draft.
Pickering attended Thursday's first round in person and heard his name announced as the pick by current Penguin defenseman Kris Letang.
