People who love St. Patrick's Day way more than you
St. Patrick's Day celebrations go way, way beyond Chicago and Boston.
In 2013, Expedition 34 Commander Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency participated in the ceremonial wearing o' the green. He did it from his post on the International Space Station.
Green day
Ireland (known for its green-faced revelers) is one of the few countries where St. Patrick's is a public holiday, traditionally celebrated on the day the saint died in the year 461.
Top that
Ireland considers St. Patrick to be its patron saint. It's no wonder that revelers in Dublin try to outdo each other in the outrageous-display department.
Green river
Chicago, of course, remains a hub for St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The dyeing of the Chicago River has been a tradition in the city for 43 years.
Pet tribute
One reveler even dyed a pet green for the day. The breed? Irish wolfhound, of course.
Serious celebration
Did we mention that Chicago takes its St. Patrick's Day seriously? In 2013, a man dressed as a leprechaun entertained the crowd on a water-propelled flyboard while workers dyed the Chicago River green.
Barack O'Bama
U.S. President Barack Obama turned the water green in the fountain of the South Lawn of the White House in 2012.
Bagpipes in Japan
Tokyo has a smaller celebration -- perhaps 1,000 people yearly -- but those there go all-out. This man, photographed in Tokyo in 2009, played the bagpipes, more traditionally associated with Scotland.
St. Patrick's in Japan
Irish setter dogs take center stage in Japan for that country's celebration of St. Patrick's Day.
A heart of green
Argentina celebrates St. Patrick's Day quite ardently, as evidenced by this paint job in Buenos Aires in 2010.
Russian revelry
The tradition of St. Patrick's Day wasn't always popular in Russia, but these days, at least 1,000 people come to celebrate it in Moscow yearly.
Sydney O'pera House
Australia marked St. Patrick's Day by recasting the hue of its iconic opera house in 2013.
Suds in Singapore
In Singapore, people take their St. Pat's celebration to the streets, sipping suds at block parties that last for up to three days.
Green Jesus
The Christ the Redeemer statue was lit in green to mark St. Patrick's Day on March 17, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ind O'Nesia
This hotel waitress served wine as part of a St. Patrick's Day celebration in Surabaya, Indonesia, in 2014.
Chicago redux
Lithuanians get into the act every year, too. Here, the River Vilnele is seen going green in 2013.
Leaning green
The leaning tower of Pisa also went green for the Irish national holiday in 2014.
