Young Students Learn About Voting Process By Helping Out On Election Day
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds of high school students learning about the Democratic process are helping out at polling places across Philadelphia Tuesday.
David Thornburgh with the Committee of Seventy, a Philadelphia based non-partisan good government group, says more than 400 high school students in their election ambassador program are helping to man neighborhood polling places.
"They're working at the polls to help voters answer questions," he says, "and just to learn something more about the process in hopes that we can help turn them into super voters down the road."
Thornburgh says parents also need to do their part to help raise the next generation of informed voters.
"If you have a young child, take him or her to the poll with you," he says. "This will demystify the process. It can be a little intimidating. It will really be a help to getting them on the road to what we believe is one of the most important rights and obligations that we have as citizens."
Thornburgh says voting is a habit that has to be nurtured and encouraged at a young age and that's what their aiming to do.
