Year In Review: A New Governor Elected In Pa.

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - KYW Newsradio is taking a look back at some of the top stories of 2014. The race for Pennsylvania governor was one for the record books... and for the history books.

It was the most expensive race for the top job in Pennsylvania state government, it was also the first time an incumbent lost a re-election campaign since the commonwealth first allowed consecutive terms back in the 60s.

Challenger Tom Wolf swept his way through the primaries by flooding the airwaves with commercials claiming Governor Tom Corbett was ignoring education and that he was letting natural gas companies get a free-ride.

Corbett was written off early by pollsters, trailing by double-digtis, and on election night, it showed those numbers to be accurate, the call made just minutes after polls closed.

Despite the historic loss, Corbett held his head high in his concession speech:

"When the history book are written ten, 15, 20 years from now, they will look at this adminsitration as one who made a huge difference in the future of Pennsylvania."

Tom Wolf had this to say:

"Let's make this Pennsylvania of ours the great place we know it can be."

But with both chambers of the state house firmly in the hands of the GOP, pundits wonder just how much Wolf will be able to accomplish.
