Police: 19-Year-Old Charged In Street Race Crash That Critically Injured Pregnant Woman, Killed Baby In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) - Police have filed charges against the 19-year-old driver of an SUV that rear-ended another vehicle and then struck a pregnant woman sitting on a wall in North Philadelphia on Monday. The crash critically injured the woman and killed her baby.

Police said Tuesday 19-year-old Yaaseen Bivines was charged with 3rd-degree murder of an unborn child as well as aggravated assault, driving under the influence and other counts.

Police say two vehicles were "engaged in a street race or chase" at high speed past the Temple University campus on Broad Street just before 5 a.m. Monday. They say an SUV rear-ended the other vehicle, which hit a tree, and the SUV jumped the curb and struck the woman who was sitting with two males on a low concrete wall.

Police said the 27-year-old woman, who was seven months pregnant, was taken to Temple University Hospital, where her baby was delivered and later pronounced dead just before 9:30 a.m. Monday. The woman was listed in extremely critical condition. Six passengers in the vehicles were seriously injured.

Bivines was ordered held on $1 million bail. It's unclear whether he has an attorney and a listed number for him couldn't be found Tuesday.
