Work Replacing Steps At Penn's Landing Set To Begin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Crews are scheduled to begin work on Monday to replace the steps leading from Market Street down to the Penn's Landing Waterfront.

Joe Forkin -- vice president of operations and development for Delaware River Waterfront Corporation -- says a contractor is set to begin removing the steps and replace them with a series of ramps:

"This project is to remove those steps which are currently not ADA compliant and replace them with a multi-model ramp that will give pedestrians, joggers, strollers the opportunity to reach the waterfront in a better way."

ADA is Americans with Disabilities Act - which requires public facilities be made more accessible.

Forkin says those who come down to Penn's Landing should be prepared:

"There will be detours set up for pedestrians that will have to walk a little bit longer along the waterfront to the Great Plaza to access the top of Chestnut and Market Street."

He says the series of concrete ramps should be finished by the end of November, just in time for the opening of the Blue Cross RiverRink Winter Fest.
