Woman Heading Back to Phila. To Face Charges of Abandoning Disabled Son

By Mark Abrams

ROCKVILLE, Md. (CBS) -- The Philadelphia woman accused of abandoning her severely disabled son in the woods in Cobbs Creek has decided not to fight her return from Maryland to face charges here.

A spokesman for the Montgomery County, Md., state's attorney's office says 41-year-old Nyia Parler waived her extradition hearing this afternoon and is being processed for return to Philadelphia to face charges of attempted murder and related offenses.

A spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Police Department says she did not have any timetable for Parler's return.

Police say Parler wheeled her 21-year-old, quadriplegic son with cerebral palsy into the woods and then boarded a bus to Maryland to visit her boyfriend.

Police believe her disabled son was there for four days, in the cold and rain, before he was found by a passerby.  He was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he is still being treated for malnutrition, dehydration, and other injuries.
