Woman survives after being shot while sitting in her car on Roosevelt Blvd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The northbound outer lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard are closed after a woman was shot in the back of her head in her car at the intersection of Conwell Avenue in Northeast Philly Friday afternoon.

Police say the shooting may have started after someone threw a water bottle out the window. They are looking to see that's what led to a shooting that left an innocent woman injured.

A bullet hole went into the rear window of a white SUV.

CBS News Philadelphia.

Police say a 35-year-old woman was shot in the head while she was driving in on Roosevelt Boulevard.

"It appears that this woman was not an intended target, and she was just driving along the boulevard," Inspector D F Pace said.

Police say this shooting may be connected to a small memorial Friday night for a man who was killed in a motorcycle crash on August 2 at Conwell Avenue in the northeast.

Investigators say someone driving on the Boulevard may have thrown a water bottle out the window near the memorial.

"Someone may have taken offense to that and took it into their own hands to fire a shot," Pace said.

Police say that shot just happened to hit an innocent woman driving. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

They say her driver's seat may have ultimately saved her life.

"In fact when the bullet penetrated the window and into the headrest, it was at the headrest that was instrumental in preventing much further damage to the victim," Pace said.

Police are using surveillance from a SEPTA bus that was passing through the area to help in their investigation.
