Wolf Withholds Signature On Budget Pending Revenue Package
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Hours ahead of the midnight Thursday deadline, the state House sent Governor Wolf a new state budget bill. But the governor says he won't sign it until there's a plan to pay for it.
Negotiations continue on that front.
Governor Wolf is getting a budget that provides an extra $200-million for basic education -- a budget Wolf says he will sign but not until "there is a sustainable revenue package to pay for it."
As the House took a final vote on the budget Thursday night, several members – including Chester County Republican Dan Truitt – lamented the situation:
"We're about to vote on a bill to spend $31.6-billion and we literally don't know where we're going to get the money."
Several ideas for additional revenue have been floated, including cigarette and other tobacco taxes.
And the House has already sent the Senate a bill that would legalize Internet gaming and allow slots play in airports and off track betting locations.
