Wolf Signs Bill Putting Secondary Schools Under PA Anti-Hazing Law

by Tony Romeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Governor Wolf has signed into law legislation that will extend the state's anti-hazing laws to cover Pennsylvania's secondary schools.

The sponsor of the bill now signed into law, Harrisburg area House Republican Ron Marsico, says hazing is not just a frat house phenomenon.

"Many people associate hazing with college fraternities. However, it extends well beyond that. And there have been many issues where high school sports teams were hazing the teammates, much to the disbelief of teachers and parents," he said.

Marsico points to several recent cases of hazing allegations, including one involving Central Bucks West High School. He says hazing is another form of bullying that must be stopped.

State law against hazing will now apply to public and private school grades 7 through 12 and will require those schools to develop and enforce policies to prevent hazing.
