PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On Wednesday evening officials with the World Meeting of Families hosted a forum where mayors from all over the country talked about issues and challenges their communities are faced with.

Mayors from Baltimore, New Orleans, and Columbia South Carolina joined Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter at La Salle University as they discussed education, policing and medical issues facing their respective cities.

"Cities in many ways are much like families," says Mitchell Landrieu, mayor of New Orleans, "because all of us have to navigate between giving a lot of folks what they need and not having enough of it. People having to share, people having to be open"

During the 90 minute long discussion, they also talked about how local government can strengthen and sustain the family through policy, law making and advocacy.

"We are working with the Department of Justice very hard to bridge this gap and have very tough conversation and critical conversation that you have to have as a family to be able to rebuild that trust." says Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

During the discussion the mayors also took questions from the audience and online viewers via Twitter.
