Winter Storm Causes Major Traffic Delays, Reduced Speed Restrictions
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The winter weather is causing traffic issues and closures around the area.
As of 10 a.m., most major highways in the area were under speed limit restrictions of 45 miles per hour. PennDOT announced Interstates 76, 95, 476, 676; U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422, and State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309 were all under speed restrictions. Delaware River Port Authority bridges remain open, but they are operating under a 25 mph speed restriction.
Throughout the area, traffic jams were cropping up due to poor road conditions and workers heading home early. Bumper to bumper traffic was reported on many major roadways, including I-95, I-76 as well as Route 1.
Eyewitness News reporter Jim Donovan said it took him 30 minutes to drive 100 feet from the station.
While PennDOT is urging motorists to stay off the roads, they want to make sure anyone who needs to travel is aware that they can check conditions and more by calling 5-1-1 or visiting www.511PA.com.
Meanwhile, many townships in the Great Philadelphia Area have declared snow emergencies, including Abington, Cheltenham, Dublin Borough, Tredyffrin Township and Lower Makefield. All residents are required to remove their vehicles from snow emergency routes or face towing.
