Why Millions Of Americans Are Not Being Treated For Substance Abuse

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The numbers are startling and certainly something that should not be ignored. 22 million Americans over the age of 12 have a substance abuse problem, but only about 2.3 million receive treatment for the issue.

A major problem is screening. Physicians and other health care providers are being encouraged to screen more aggressively, and it's not hard or expensive to do.

All that needs to be done is to ask certain tough questions; questions like, "do you find yourself looking forward to your next drink? Have you ever blacked out as a result of drinking? Have you found yourself in positions where you've lost control or could be harmed as a result of alcohol abuse?" All of these questions are very important mostly because you're asking them and you're thinking about your lifestyle.

Remember, alcohol issues are something which can develop over time and can sneak up on you. It is important to break the cycle, but you can't break the cycle without first identifying it.
