What's Cooking on 1060: Drexel's Juicy Partnership With Iovine's Produce

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Iovine's Produce at Reading Terminal Market is partnering with Drexel University students who are providing nutritional labels for their fresh-pressed juices.
Vinnie Iovine, co-owner of Iovine's Produce at Reading Terminal Market, says all of their juices are created fresh on site using a cold press machine.
"It actually does like a quick, soft grind, so you don't lose any nutrients, and it drops it into a hopper/bag and it presses all the juice out of it."
And this month, Stella Volpe, chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University, says her students begin analyzing their mixed juices and using the information to create personalized nutritional information labels.
"So there are specific instruments that we're going to put these juices into."
"When we did orange juice, it's 100% pure. Now, when we're doing these other items, we're going to really be able to tell the customer what they're getting and they want to know."
Student Nicole Stein says in the lab, you can read all the nutrients and the quantities found in the juice.
"We'll be able to do with a whole bunch of vitamins and do that with calories also and maybe some minerals in the future."
Despite doing all of the work, Volpe says she's thrilled about this partnership:
"Our students are here getting experience. They're giving nutrition education, they're getting experience in the lab and then finally, the people, the customers are going to benefit and we're in a health-services industry and we want to help people."
