Tips To Keep You Safe From The Summer Sun

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On this unofficial start to the summer season, it's a good time to start thinking about keeping your skin safe.

Skin cancer is the number one malignancy, but you can take action to protect yourself, according to Dr. Christine Stanko, a dermatologist at Bryn Mawr Dermatology. She suggests you take a close look at yourself, often.

"They recommend once a month, many people find their own skin cancers simply because they're paying attention to their own bodies, that means head to toe just looking over your entire skin surface," Stanko said.

She says tell your doctor if you notice any changes in the color or size of moles and freckles. Always use sunscreen, don't forget the hat, and stay out of the sun during peak hours.
