PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you want to stay young mentally and physically one of the best ways to do this might be exercising.

Exercise increases your brain's plasticity, or connections between cells. It also releases a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor. This chemical helps new brain cells develop and thrive.

But what is the best amount of exercise? Most studies suggest thirty minutes a day on most days. The CDC recommends a goal of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity and two days of strength-training each week.

One of the best ways to try and hit that goal is to try something new whenever you can. And never underestimate the power of day to day activities stay moving and engaged all day. Even housecleaning and climbing the stairs offer benefits.
