West Philly Shooting Rampage Victim Speaks Out About Horrifying Night
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- "Why is there people like that out in the streets to harm people like us?"
Marty Washington was helping out and working at his favorite West Philly lounge on Friday when gunfire erupted down the block. At the time, he had no idea that suspected gunman Nicholas Glenn had shot 18 times into Philadelphia Police Sgt. Sylvia Young's cruiser.
He also didn't know that he and a colleague would be next.
Fallen Philadelphia Officer Honored With Hero Plaque Dedication
"I got hit and then I was in the hospital," he recalled. He was shot twice in the leg and the thigh. He and a coworker were hospitalized and five days later were released. He credits the muscle in his legs for his swift recovery.
His real pain now comes from thinking of where the suspect began firing shots after he left the lounge. "That young lady didn't think, sitting secure inside a car, that she was unsafe." That woman was shot inside a car and died from her injuries.
It's ironic. Washington usually fears for his wife when it comes to gun violence. Like Sgt. Young, she is a Philadelphia Police Officer.
