PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- "Mindfulness" is a practice that some high-powered workplaces like Google are now using. It's not new, but it has been gaining in popularity. A local woman and positive psychology expert hosts monthly meetups around the city to help people become mindful.

"Mindfulness is all about awareness of the present moment being able to bring your focus your awareness into this moment," says positive psychology expert and Penn grad Pax Tandon.

Tandon says the benefits of mindfulness are decreasing stress levels, decreasing Cortisol in the body which is the stress hormone, increasing your capacity for sharpness and awareness so it actually does make you smarter the more you practice it. She says there are many ways you can practice it.

"The predominant way that people use which is very accessible is through breathing. It's all about present moment awareness of your breath because your breath is with you at every moment that the simplest tool to use to stay anchored and grounded in the present," Tandon says.

On the third Tuesday of every month Tandon hosts mindfulness meetups around city and they are free.

"I want people to know mindfulness is a science and approachable. It's not this difficult thing that's completely over the top, too much to imbibe in your life, and that's what I've done allowing people to come to a place and learn this in a very easy to approach way," she says.
