Child Critical, Parents Injured In West Oak Lane House Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)-- A young girl remains hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued from her burning home in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia. Her parents also suffered minor injuries.

Flames broke around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6500 block of N. Bouvier Street.

Authorities say a family of three was inside the burning house. The mother and father got out safely, but their young daughter was stuck on the second floor, so firefighters jumped into action.

"Companies made a Herculean effort to get to a young child who at this point has been transported [and] is in critical but stable condition at the hospital," said Dep. Commissioner Anthony Sneidar, with the Philadelphia Fire Department.

Rescuers are being hailed heroes for making their way through the home, refusing to give up on the child.

"We had firefighters go up through the interior while the fire was still on the first floor and that's how we were fortunate to get to this young child," Sneidar said.

The girl's parents were also taken to the hospital for evaluation, but their injuries were not considered serious.

The initial indication is that the fire may have originated on the first floor of the home, but authorities are still investing.

It's unclear if the home had any working smoke detectors
