Weekend Box Office Report: Beam Me Up! 'Star Trek' Soars To First

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The new Star Trek sequel traveled beyond all right. All the way to a first-place finish.

The 13th installment in the movie series, Star Trek Beyond, earned an estimated $60-million on its opening weekend.

That dropped the box office leader of the last two weekends – the animated comedy, The Secret Life of Pets, into the runner-up slot with $29-million.

The holdover comedy, Ghostbusters, tied for third place with just under $22-million, the same take as the new horror thriller, Lights Out.

And rounding out the top five was the debuting animated sequel, Ice Age: Collision Course, which took in $21-million.

Overall, industry-wide totals were well ahead of those of last weekend as well as those of the counterpart weekend a year ago.
