Weekend Box Office Report: Transformers Crushes The Competition For The Second Straight Week

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Transformers franchise is anything but extinct.
In its second weekend, the science fiction sequel, Transformers: Age of Extinction, made it two weekends in a row on top of the box-office heap by earning an estimated $36-million for another convincing first-place finish.
Second place went to the Melissa McCarthy comedy, Tammy, which took in a respectable $21-million on its weekend debut.
In third place was the horror thriller, Deliver Us from Evil, with just under $10–million.
As for the Independence Day weekend's other new mainstream release -- the family science-fiction adventure, Earth to Echo -- it earned just over $8-million in its debut, good for a modest sixth-place finish.
Overall, industry-wide box office totals were very low, significantly under those of the holiday weekend a year ago.
