Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Secret Life Of Pets' Fights To Top Of Box Office
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a secret no more. The animated comedy, 'The Secret Life of Pets,' took first place at the box office by earning an estimated, whopping $103-million on its initial weekend of release.
It's the sixth biggest animated debut in movie history.
That dropped the recent box office champ -- another animated attraction, 'Finding Dory' – into a virtual tie for second place, as it and the holdover drama, 'The Legend of Tarzan,' took in $20-million each.
Fourth place went to the new comedy, 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,' with Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick, which had an opening-weekend total of $17-million.
And rounding out the top five was the holdover horror thriller, 'The Purge: Election Year,' with $12-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly behind those of last year, but well ahead of those of last weekend.
