Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Maze Runner' Finds Its Way Into First Place

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Multiplex box office picked up a bit following several consecutive slow-slower-slowest weekends.

The youth-oriented science fiction thriller, The Maze Runner, claimed first place, earning an estimated $33-million on its weekend debut.

Second place belonged to the debuting Liam Neeson thriller, A Walk Among the Tombstones, which took in $13-million.

In third was the weekend's other new mainstream release, the comedy-drama, This Is Where I Leave You, with Jason Bateman and Tina Fey. It opened with a total of $12–million.

The top three new attractions dropped last weekend's leader, No Good Deed, to fourth place. It earned $10-million on its second weekend.

Overall, industry-wide totals rebounded after several dismal weekends in a row, easily surpassing those of the counterpart weekend of a year ago.
