Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Equalizer' Is Equal To The Task

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The reliable bankable, Denzel Washington, was more than equal to the task.

His new thriller, The Equalizer, in which he plays a justice-seeking vigilante, turned The Maze Runner, last weekend's leader, into a one-week wonder.

The Equalizer, Washington's action thriller based on the eighties TV series that starred Edward Woodward, earned an estimated $35-million on its debut weekend.

That dropped The Maze Runner into second place with just over $17-million, putting it in a virtual tie with the new animated adventure, The Boxtrolls.

These were the only three titles to eclipse the $10-million mark on September's final weekend.

Overall, industry-wide totals were ever-so-slightly below those of the counterpart weekend a year ago.
