Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Angry Birds Movie' Flies To The Top

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Those flightless birds are flying high at the box office.

The animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, finished in first place on its debut weekend, earning an estimated $39-million.

That dropped the box office leader of the last two weekends – the superhero fantasy sequel, Captain America: Civil War – into second place. It took in another $33-million, pushing its cumulative take over the $347-million mark.

Another new attraction finished third, the comedy sequel, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. It earned $22-million.

The weekend's other debuting mainstream movie -- the period buddy flick, The Nice Guys, with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe – placed fourth with an opening-weekend total of $11-million.

Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly higher than those of last weekend but a good deal lower than those of a year ago.
